Gunderson Funeral Home in Fort Dodge assisted with arrangements at the time of her death. Beryl was born on January 13, 1925 to Guy E. and Lucile (McCray) White on a farm south of Rolfe, Iowa. She attended school in Rolfe and graduated from Rolfe High School in 1943. As she was growing up she assisted her mother, brother, and sister in running the farm on which they lived. She was active in music and drama at school and also began to sing in the church choir. She participated in 4-H and held leadership roles in the the local club and on the County Fair Board. At one of the 4-H fairs she met Marvin Johnson, but after a few dates Marvin joined the Army Air Corps and Beryl went on to college. She attended Iowa State College from which she graduated in 1947 with a B.S. in Home Economics Education. When Marvin came to Iowa State after the war their relationship resumed. Beryl taught one year in Lytton before she and Marvin were married on August 22, 1948 in the Rolfe Methodist Church. They lived on the family farm near Fonda. Beryl worked a year as the Home Economist for Pocahontas County prior to resigning so she could do what she desired, which was to work with Marvin on the farm. Beryl became a member of the Evangelical Covenant Church, Pomeroy, Iowa in 1948 and actively participated in and contributed to church activities. She was Primary Sunday School Superintendent for over 10 years and taught Sunday School classes and Bible School. She held all of the Covenant Women offices and served as congregational secretary and on several church committees, including two of the building committees. She sang in the church choir for 62 years. She also served on the Twin Lakes Christian Center Board for over a decade and was a member of the Pocahontas Literature club for over 30 years. Marvin and Beryl retired from farming in 1987 and in 2006 they moved to Kenyon Place at Friendship Haven in Fort Dodge. Since that time she had been a resident of different communities at Friendship Haven, including the Gardens, Stone Heights, and the Journeys, which is where she was residing at the time of her death. Beryl was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Margaret Virginia (Holcomb) and her brother Everett. She is survived by her husband of 71 years, Marvin, her daughter Maryl (David McPherson) of Madison, Wisconsin; son Brian (Ashley Wheater) of Chicago and nephew and family Gary and Nancy Holcomb and Todd of Ames, Iowa. Beryl's family would like to thank the staff at Journeys for their compassionate and loving care during the final months of her life. The family requests that any memorials be sent to the Friendship Haven Memorial Fund, 420 Kenyon Road, Fort Dodge, Iowa 50501, to the attention of Denise Halverson.
