Richard Snell, 90, of Fort Dodge, passed away on Saturday, December 19, 2020, at the Bickford Cottages in Fort Dodge. Graveside services with full military honors conducted by the United States Navy and America Legion Post #1856 will be held at 10:30 AM on Wednesday, December 23, 2020, at the Washington Lutheran Cemetery, rural Duncombe, Iowa. Visitation will be from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM on Wednesday at the Gunderson Funeral Home & Cremation Services in Fort Dodge. Richard Dale Snell, the son of Charles and Mae (Davidson) Snell, was born February 26, 1930, in Webster City, Iowa. Richard graduated from Duncombe High School. He enlisted into the United Statas Navy on January 18, 1951 and served on the battleship the USS Bremerton as their chief electrician. Richard received special recognition for saving the ship’s electrical system during the military engagements in the Pacific Ocean. He also received several medals, Good Conduct Medal, China Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, and the Korean Service Medal. Richard received his honorable discharge from the Navy on December 2, 1954. He was a lifelong electrician. During the 1960’s he and his brother owned and operated Snell Electric. He later worked as a salesman for Iowa Electrical Supply Company. He was fortunate to retire at the age of 56. For the last 25 years, Richard has wintered in Mission, Texas. Richard was a member of American Legion Post #491 of Duncombe, Iowa. Richard is preceded in death by his parents: two sisters, Roberta Johnson and Dorcas Simpson and his three brothers, Norman Snell, LeRoy Snell and Eldon Snell. He is survived by his nieces and nephews and cousins.
