Arlyas "Howdy" Houdeshell Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

Arlyas “Howdy” Houdeshell, 77, formerly from Otho, passed away on Tuesday, March 8, 2022, at the Fort Dodge Health & Rehabilitation in Fort Dodge. Graveside services will be 1:30 PM on Tuesday, March 15, 2022, at the Callender Cemetery in Callender. The Gunderson Funeral Home & Cremation Services of Fort Dodge are overseeing arrangements. Arlyas Howdy Houdeshell, the son of Cecil and Ruth (Lane) Houdeshell, was born June 27, 1944, in Lake City, Iowa. He grew up on the farm in rural Callender, graduated from Callender High School in 1962, and went to Barbering College in Sioux City, Iowa. Howdy apprenticed under Elwyn “Sandy” Sandgren, his brother-in-law, and set up shop on eleventh street, known as Howdy’s Barber Shop. Later he became a dispatcher at the LEC in Fort Dodge as well as Umthun Trucking. The last few years before Howdy becoming ill he worked with the night crew at Wal Mart. Howdy was an avid car racing fan in his younger years and worked as a crew man for some of the drivers. His interest in racing then turned to the Nascar racing competitions and he seldom missed a race on television. Howdy is survived by a son in California, his sister, Ilah Sandgren, aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia in 2005, his parents, and his sister Lucille Cooper.
