Joyce Ryan, 85, of Fort Dodge, died August 24, 2021 at the Israel Family Hospice Home in Ames. Memorial service will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 4, 2021 at Harvest Baptist Church, Fort Dodge. Joyce Leta Anderson, daughter of Orville and Ardyce (Vold) Anderson, was born April 30, 1936 in rural Story City, Iowa. She graduated from Roland High School in 1954, and attended Capital City Commercial College (4 C’s) in Des Moines where she completed the one-year Executive Secretary Course in nine months. Joyce worked for the Poultry Inspection Division, U.S. Department of Agriculture, in Des Moines from 1955 to 1962 as executive secretary to the Area Supervisor. During that time, she was called to Washington D.C. to temporarily help train new employees there in approval of poultry food packaging material bearing the U.S.D.A. Inspected for Wholesomeness seal. Joyce was the only U.S.D.A. poultry inspection employee in the United States outside of Washington D.C. who was not a veterinarian doing seal approval. While with the U.S.D.A. Joyce met her future husband, Dr. Bill Ryan, who also worked for Poultry Inspection. They married April 14, 1962, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Des Moines and then she moved to Fort Dodge where Dr. Ryan was employed with Fort Dodge Laboratories. She worked for Land O’Lakes as secretary to the Director of Agronomy from 1970 to 1974. From 1977 to 2003 Joyce was office manager at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Fort Dodge. Survivors include children William Emmett IV “Bill” (Denise) of DePere, Wisconsin, and Michael (Jennifer) of Carmel, Indiana, and seven grandchildren, Olivia, Victoria, and twins William Emmett V and Alexandria in Wisconsin, and John, Patrick and Lauren in Indiana. Other survivors include sister Nancy Eischen of Ames, Iowa, and brother Paul Anderson of Story City, Iowa, and sisters-in-law Barbara Anderson of Norwalk, Iowa, and Karen Anderson of Huxley, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her husband William Emmett III “Bill”, son Gregory Shane, her parents, Orville and Ardyce Anderson of Story City, Iowa, and brothers Roger Anderson of Story City, Iowa, and Larry Anderson of Huxley, Iowa. Burial will be in the National Cemetery at Fort Bliss, El Paso, Texas, with her husband, William Emmett III “Bill”, and son Greg.
